Street Parties

Tenants held street parties to celebrate key events associated with the end of hostilities, such as Peace Day in 1919 and VE and VJ Days in 1945. They also marked royal events, including George

V’s Silver Jubilee (1935) and the Coronation of George VI (1937). Tables and chairs were moved into the street and afternoon tea and gifts provided for the children. Activities included sports, children’s performances and fancy dress parades; ventriloquists, conjurors and Punch and Judy puppeteers provided entertainment.
