Walthamstow Historical Society photo walk

Thanks so much to everyone who came on the photography walk with Walthamstow Historical Society yesterday, and thanks in particular to Neil Houghton, for leading what was a really fascinating and entertaining 2 hour walk. We started by Station Florists, St James Street station walking around to the side of the station to Courtenay Place and Courtenay Mews, as Neil explained this was the site of some of the Warner’s first developments and the site of a notorious murder – during the trial the state of the housing conditions was described as slums. These were later demolished, and in their […]

Ex Warner Project Talk

Thanks so much to everyone who came to the Ex Warner Project talk at St Michael & All Angels Church Hall last night. We had over 40 people. Great to see so many of the participants and to have to many current and past Warner residents attending. (KG)

Warner Residents Tea Party

We had such a lovely weekend at the exhibition, just under 150 visitors came on both the Saturday and Sunday, so thanks everyone who visited. On Sunday we had a tea party for current and previous Warner residents. Cakes with ‘W.E’ in green and cream were provided by Aura Rosa cakes and proved very popular with visitors. Visitors were asked to wear a sticker with the number of years they’d lived in a Warner property. Two ex residents came all the way from Peterborough. My favourite moment was our visitor who had moved into a Warner flat that day meeting […]

Opening night

With the gallery space cleaned, audio installed, photographs and historical documents up and in place, drinks delivered we are ready to welcome guests. A steady stream of Warner residents past and present begin to arrive, along with members of Waltham Forest Council, friends and neighbours. One of the many things that made the night so special for me was seeing the sense of community and pride that bringing everyone together generated. It was a fantastic night, thanks to everyone for making it so special. (KG)

We have the keys!

We have the keys to the space, the space is a former Warner rent office on Brettenham Road. The actual address is 2A Rushbrook Crescent. The office is one storey, contains a front and back room, a small kitchen and toilet, plus a yard and a large shed. The smell of damp is overpowering when we first arrive, and the space hasn’t been used for quite some time. The task of installing the show in a two day period is about to begin! (KG)

Publication goes to print!

An exciting day today as our publication, designed by Sara Carnholm, went off to print at Aldgate Press. The 80 page book contains interviews, contemporary and historic photographs, as well as research and introduction by Kirstin Sibley. Photo above shows Lucy and Steve choosing paper. Looking forward to it being delivered for our exhibition opening at the end of May. (KG)

Get involved with the ex-Warner project!

We’re looking for volunteers in May and June The E17 Art Trail is fast approaching and we’re now looking for volunteers (over 18 years of age) to help with our exhibition and events. We’re asking you first as we’d like some of the volunteers to be project participants or people who share our interest in Warner properties. Our secret exhibition space is in the Lloyd Park area and that is where most things will be taking place. We’ll be able to cover local transport costs and food and drink expenses, and can provide references in the future if that helps […]

End of an era

We’ve come to the end of the time we scheduled to spend on interviews and photographs, although we still have a long list of people we would have liked to have included. Hopefully there will be other chances to continue this in the future. We’ve met some wonderful people and seen inside some amazing properties. Also we’ve heard a bit from the other side, people who worked for Warner’s and those at Circle 33 who have been involved with managing and refurbishing the ex-Warner rented properties. It’s fascinating to find the traces of the Warner Estate around Walthamstow, including this […]

Fireplaces, parlours and sculleries

This week I was lucky enough to meet Roger Dear, who used to be one of the area managers for the Warner Estate and who worked for them in different roles for over 40 years until they sold the remaining properties to Circle 33 in 2001. He told me about how the properties were maintained under the Warners and about how they were modernised at different stages. Interestingly for me, he told me about the changes that would have been made to my own flat. Although I knew that the kitchen and bathroom would have been in a different configuration […]
